Helen Britton is an internationally acclaimed contemporary jeweller. Based in Munich, she exhibits in Amsterdam, Paris, New York, Auckland and Berlin. Her solo exhibition The Thing I See is currently at Gallery Funaki in Melbourne. Where Rich and Poor Meet: a craft response to climate change
Date: Monday, 14 July 2008
Time: 6pm-8pm
Cost: Members: Free / Non-members: $3
The Kyoto protocols call for a multilateral approach to global warming. Third world demands for economic growth have to be factored in alongside first world abstinence. The doomsday scenario has opened opportunities for equal dialogue between the rich and poor of the world. How might craft factor in this? Emerging practices include collaborations between designers and traditional artisans. What is ‘world craft’ and what role might it play in building the trust necessary for negotiations to continue beyond Bali?

Public Art: Locating Community
Date: Monday, 23 June 2008
Time: 6pm-8pm
Cost: Members: Free / Non-members: $3
When is community collaboration, participation, or consultation required (or desirable)? Who is the community in a public art project? This session provides insights into models of negotiating community and community involvement in public art practice. Followed by an opportunity for discussion, four speakers will each offer examples of public art in order to reflect on the different ways in which “community” is understood at stages of brief development, artist and concept selection, artwork production, and installation.

Presenters:

Lisa Philip-Harbutt (Director, Community Arts Network SA)
Place-making: is the role of communities in public art confined to being the viewers of objects placed within their environment? Artists are venturing into community ‘places’ with fresh eyes and specialised skills, but it is the community who hold much of the local knowledge and they will still be there when the artists have gone home. A collaborative approach can help build more creative places for art to exist.

Marg Edgecombe (Team Leader, Arts & Cultural Development, City of Marion)
Commissions, Collaborations, Consultation or Participation. There are a variety of approaches to developing public art and involving the community without designing the proverbial camel (a horse by committee). Marg will present some practical examples of the process and resulting artworks from the City of Marion and beyond.

Tony Rosella (Artist) & Judi Francis (Interpretive Planner, Department for Environment & Heritage)
Ikara - the meeting place, Old Wilpena Station, Flinders Ranges National Park provides an inspirational sculptural space where Adnyamathanha people can share their culture with park visitors and discuss the role played by their community as the Flinders Ranges’ pastoral industry developed. Sculptor & metalworker, Tony Rosella designed and constructed Ikara in close consultation with the Adnyamathanha community and the Department for Environment and Heritage.
