Public Artist Talk: Matthew Harding

Following his November 2009 residency at the JamFactory Furniture Design Studio, Melbourne-based public artist and designer Matthew Harding discussed the ‘tos and fros’ and risk-taking of developing public art, as well as the sense of accomplishment once a public art commission is complete. His training in the visual arts, construction industries and various craft traditions has led him to use materials ranging from cutting-edge technologies to wood, stone and bronze in the production of objects such as delicate fine art pieces, prototype designs for production or large-scale public sculpture.
Introduction to Marketing for Artists

Presenters: Anne Robertson, Craftsouth executive director, and Edwin Relf, 30 years in arts management including Neil Ward Publicity, Don Dunstan Foundation, and Craftsouth.
This session introduced marketing for craft, design and visual art practitioners. Anne Robertson discussed the client database, explaining how creating and using one can assist you to reach new markets. Edwin Relf provided an overview of marketing basics, looking at the fundamental dynamic at the root of the business transaction: the dance of seller and buyer.

Gabriella Bisetto is an independent glass artist and the head of the Ceramics and Glass department at the School of Art, Architecture and Design, University of South Australia. Gabriella discussed her recent Australia Council residency at the Rome Studio, Italy as well as the development of work for her exhibition “Not Absolute”, opened Friday, 24 July 2009 at the Flinders University City Gallery.
Best Foot Forward 2: How to successfully address a public art design brief

Best Foot Forward 2 was a free four-part public art workshop enabling participants to increase their knowledge and skills in preparing and presenting a professional response to a public art concept design brief. Facilitated by experienced educators and public art practitioners, Marijana Tadic and Martin Corbin, the program used public art project briefs and assessment processes to address definitions, project brief analysis, conceptual development and presentation skills, and to guide participants in preparing and presenting their own responses, individually and in teams.
Monday 11 May 2009: Workshop 1—Introduction, terminology, expectations, analysis of the brief.
Monday 1 June 2009: Tutorial 1—Concept development; model making; individual & group feedback.
Monday 15 June 2009: Tutorial 2—Presentation and interview skills; individual & group feedback.
Monday 6 July 2009: Workshop 2—Presentations to a selection panel of invited industry experts.
Basic Tax and Easy Financial Management For Artists

Writing an Artist Statement

The importance of an impressive and effective artist statement (or professional practice statement) can never be underestimated. Gain tips on how to write a clear statement that promotes your ideas and work succinctly from one of South Australia’s most respected visual arts writers.
Workshop Format: Prepare your artist statement and forward it to Craftsouth by Monday 23 February 2009. Wendy will review your statement return it to the workshop group with feedback and tips for improvement. This will be a unique and valuable opportunity to discuss and learn more about the artist statement in a small group environment.

Arts SA Independent Artists Grant Program
