Inside SAM's Place 2010–11 Commencing January 2010
Beginning its fourth instalment in 2010, this creative collaboration between Craftsouth and the SA Museum will continue to mix elements of visual art and design with the scientific works found at the museum. Inside SAM’s Place 2010 will see five artists search through the SA Museum’s current collections and create entirely new works based on what they find. Their work will be exhibited in three phases through 2011, adding new voices and perspectives to the museum’s historical collections. Coming from a variety of differing backgrounds and disciplines, the artists featured in this project promise to produce a range of exciting results. Featured artists Annalise Rees — From My House to Antarctica: Imagining the great unknown — Annalise Rees will use items from the museum’s Mawson Collection to create an installation project focusing on South Australia’s historical connection with Antarctic exploration. Using objects, artefacts, and scientific data, the work will feature 2D and 3D dimensional components and will include school-based artist talks and workshops. Students will be invited to create their own Antarctic adventure —drawing maps, designing artefacts, and acting the role of exhibition leader. Rosie Hannam, Tom Moore and Lauren Simeoni — The Laurosto Collection — Specialising in glass, textiles and jewellery, these three artists will be working together to assemble a fictitious collection of animals, artefacts, minerals and ceremonial objects belonging to the fictional 19th century explorer and scientist Sam Laurosto. To be known as The Laurosto Collection, the created works will be accompanied with a travel journey, allowing school groups to decipher and track the Laurosto discoveries throughout the museum. Sera Waters — Drawing inspiration from her love of birds, Sera will be developing fabric semi-sculptures to represent different types of South Australian birds, their biology, nests and habitats. She will also be examining the important roles birds have played in shaping South Australia’s identity. Workshops in craft bird making will also be held throughout the exhibition, with materials and techniques modified to suit differing age groups.
